WITH BRENNA OUT FOR the evening and Marissa unaccounted for, Kim found herself thinking longingly of the carnival the night before. The entertainment level might have been a bit sophomoric, but at least it had been unpredictable–which was more than she could say of the very boring book which lay open on her lap. She yawned and wrapped her grandmother’s wedding-ring quilt more tightly around her.

It was getting late. Robert’s restaurant must be unusually busy for a Tuesday evening, and it appeared that Brenna’s stockbroker had turned out to be extraordinarily exciting. As for where Marissa was... She only hoped Marissa got home before Brenna did. Though Kim wasn’t looking forward to telling her about Tanner’s call, it would be a whole lot better than having her find out from Brenna.

Kim was almost asleep when a key clicked in the lock, and she was startled when Marissa came in with Robert, who was cradling a very large, insulated paper bag. “Look who I found in the elevator,” Marissa said. “Robert says you were expecting him.”

Kim tried to untangle herself from the quilt so she could get up, with little success.

“Sit still,” Robert ordered. “I’ll just take all this through to the kitchen.”

“One thing about it,” Marissa mused. “Coming home is a lot more adventurous these days. You never know who you’ll run into.” She sank onto the opposite end of the couch from Kim. “I hate school board meetings, especially ones where I have to make a presentation. These little talks are supposed to be simply to inform the board, but let’s be realistic. These are the people who are setting the budget for next year, so if they’re not impressed...”

Better say it fast, Kim thought, before Robert came back and there wasn’t another opportunity. “Riss, Tanner called tonight.”

Marissa yawned. “What did he want?”

Kim took a deep breath and plunged. “To talk to Brenna. I thought you should know.”

Marissa sighed deeply.

“Sorry,” Kim mumbled. She didn’t know what else to say.

Robert returned with a tray held high. “Creme brulee for everyone.” He set the tray on the coffee table. “Dig in.”

Kim feasted her senses on the perfect brown crust atop the custard dishes. “We couldn’t be so inelegant as to gobble something that looks like this.”

Marissa reached for a spoon. “Speak for yourself. I’m famished after that incredible meeting.”

Robert pulled up a straight chair and sat down across from them.

“Aren’t you going to have one?” Kim asked.

He shook his head. “I eat far too many rich dishes at work. I thought you said Brenna would be here, so I brought three.”

“Oh. When you called, she was just going out.”

“She’s home now,” Marissa murmured.

Her ears must be very sensitive. The first thing Kem heard was Brenna’s key turning in the lock a moment later.

Brenna paused in the doorway, making an entrance.

“Having a party without me? Shame on you,” Brenna said cheerfully.

Robert sat up straighter. “I brought one for you.”

“Lovely man,” Brenna murmured. “But I can’t, really.”

Marissa spooned up the last bite. “Tanner called while you were gone, Bren.
